MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Another red light is going up on a busy road in East Montgomery and it may be the first of several new stop lights designed to make you safer.

The new light is going up at Taylor Road at Winton Blount Boulevard - near the Atlanta Highway. That's right where Montgomery's main post office is located.

A new red light typically costs between $125,000 and $150,000, but the city won't be feeling the heat for this light. The costs were offset by ATS - the company that oversees the city's red light camera.

A red light camera will also be added to this intersection.

The new light should be installed in about a week and will start in "flash mode." It will be fully operational in about two weeks.

Several other red lights may be going up on Vaughn Road between Montgomery Catholic High School and Saint James, at Wynlakes Boulevard, and at the entrance to the Deer Creek subdivision.

Crash activity reports from the Alabama Department of Public Safety show the number of people who died in vehicle crashes where seat belts were available and were not wearing seat belts increased from last month.

According to preliminary traffic crash data, there were 45 people killed in vehicle crashes investigated by state troopers in Alabama in April 2013 compared to 42 in March. Of that number, 37 were in vehicles where seat belts were available, and 26 victims were not wearing seat belts up from 20 in March. That’s six more deaths.

“Too many people continue to die in crashes because they are not wearing seat belts,” said Transportation Director John Cooper. “It’s a proven fact that buckling up every time we get behind the wheel or ride as a passenger helps save lives.
