Following the most successful season in the program’s young history, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team was rewarded with its highest ranking, as it earned the No. 7 spot in the 2012 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Thursday.

The Warhawks, who earned a school-best 42 victories and made its first appearance in the NAIA Tournament, earned 450 total points in the final poll. The total was just seven behind Concordia (Calif.), the top team in the nation entering the tournament.

National Champion Shorter earned all 20 first-place votes and 560 total points. Oklahoma City finished second with 542 points, while Cal State San Marcos finished third with 516. Southern States Athletic Conference rival Brenau was fourth with 500 points, while Central Baptist rounded out the top five with 479 points.

The Warhawks, Eagles and Golden Tigers were three of six SSAC teams ranked in the top 25. Joining the two squads were No. 8 William Carey, No. 12 Lee and No. 24 Mobile. Brewton-Parker was among the other’s receiving votes.

AUM finished the 2012 campaign with a 42-20 record, including a 4-2 mark in the NAIA Tournament, where it won Pool H in pool play.
