Animal Enrichment Day at the Montgomery Zoo is Saturday!

Animal Enrichment Day at the Montgomery Zoo is Saturday!

Join the excitement at your City of Montgomery Zoo, Saturday February 18, 2012 between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm for Animal Enrichment Day.  Tour the Zoo with the zoo staff as they introduce new stimuli to the animals in their various habitats.  Animal enrichment takes place every day at your Montgomery Zoo, but twice per year we open the festivities to the public.

So, what exactly is animal enrichment all about?  Animal enrichment is the process of introducing new things to an animal’s surroundings and environment.  This new stimuli provides mental and physical stimulation to the animals which in turn encourages natural and healthy behavior.  It is a positive experience for animals to adapt to change and the introduction of new items in their surroundings.  Year-round, enrichment is occurring unannounced throughout the exhibits, but the Zoo devotes two days a year showing the public what enrichment is all about.

Most Alabama Public Fishing Lakes Reopen Wednesday

Most Alabama Public Fishing Lakes Reopen Wednesday

February 1 marks the return of the fishing season schedule for 18 of Alabama's 23 state-owned public fishing lakes. Commonly known as state lakes or county lakes, these waters are noted for their quality fishing for bream, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie (in some lakes). Because these smaller lakes warm more quickly than larger waters, early spring fishing can be excellent. Anglers may fish from the pier, bank, rental boat or personal boat.

Three additional lakes are scheduled to reopen later this year: Barbour County Lake, Bibb County Lake, and Dale County Lake (Ed Lisenby Lake). Lower Geneva County Lake and Lee County Lake will remain closed.

Five Alabama State Parks have received playground and landscaping improvements with funding support from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). The ADEM funding was made possible through the Alabama Scrap Tire Fund and the ADEM Scrap Tire Marketing program which develops and assists demonstration projects to highlight the use of recycled tire materials.

The $84,439 in funding was used to purchase recycled tire mulch and supplies for playground and landscaping improvements at Roland Cooper, Joe Wheeler, DeSoto, Lake Guntersville, and Buck's Pocket state parks.
