Montgomery to lauch animal control initiative

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police Department Animal Control Bureau is preparing for a series of neighborhood sweeps in areas of the city where dogs are running at large and canine inoculations have been "problematic".

The initiative will include neighborhood outreach by Animal Control Units working to emphasize to the public the importance of canine inoculations and rabies inspections, as well as the hazards of dogs running at large. 

The sweeps will be held on each Wednesday for five weeks, starting at 2 p.m starting June 29, July 6, and going July 13, July 20 and July 27 at the sites listed above. 

If the sweeps are not conducted in your neighborhood, or if you wish to speak with Animal Control, units will be available at the staging areas included below from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

20th Annual Firefighter Combat Challenge fires away

MONTGOMERY (WSFA)  - The 20th Annual Firefighter Combat Challenge is set to fire away June 17-18. The competition will promote the importance of firefighter fitness.

There will be different events including races and a special “Kids Challenge” featuring inflatable bouncers.

Montgomery Fire Chief Milford Jordan expects more than 100 competitors and visitors from throughout the Southeast to join the fun.

“City residents and visitors will love watching this event, which ESPN has referred to as the toughest two minutes in sports,” said Dawn Hathcock, Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President.

The competition will also feature a course comprising of five events: forcible entry, victim rescue, the hose hoist, the hose advance, and the high-rise pack carry.

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - A new stop sign was installed this morning at the intersection of LeBron Road and Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Cloverdale-Idlewild community in Montgomery.

The installation of the stop sign is just one of many improvements to the Cloverdale area that is expected to wrap up this summer.

Construction Continues to Change the Face of Alabama State University

Since 2007 the Alabama State University’s campus has continued to undergo an extensive makeover, including infrastructure improvements, renovations, and new academic facilities. The construction is part of a five-phase, $600 million plan projected to be completed in 2035.

Construction workers continue to swarm the campus, working around the clock to finish the last of several first-phase projects.

Kippy Tate, vice president of Building and Grounds, said the University is on schedule to have the first phase completed in 2012.

“We’ve customized the Master Plan to suit the needs of present and future ASU students,” Tate said. “It is exciting to see where we’re heading.”

The Embassy Suites and Downtown Montgomery has renovated nearly all of its 237 rooms. The hotel updated the bathrooms, replaced the TV’s with Plasma TV’s and improved the wet bars.
