District 7 City Council Candidate's Forum TONIGHT

The Cloverdale-Idlewild Neighborhood Association will be hosting a candidate's forum on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 for everyone competing for the District 7 seat on the Montgomery City Council. This forum will take place at the Cloverdale Baptist Church at 7:00 PM. This forum will be held in the basement of the church, which may be accessed through the church entrance on Mastin Lane. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend. This is a great opportunity to meet the candidates and ask any questions you might have.

Voter registration for municipal election ends this week

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Election Center announced the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Municipal Election is Friday, August 12, 2011.

Citizens living in Montgomery must be registered and qualified to vote in the Municipal Election on August 23, 2011.  Citizens can register at any County Probate Tag office, city and county library branch, county health department office and the Board of Registrar's office located at 100 South Lawrence Street.  Registered voters who have changed their address or name since registering are encouraged to update their information with the Board of Registrar's office by calling 832-1215 to request a Voter's Reidentification form.

Montgomery mayoral race down to two as May fails to qualify

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - Citizens of Montgomery will head to the polls on August 23rd to vote for mayor and city council.  As of Tuesday's 5:00 p.m. deadline, three mayoral hopefuls had filed papers to run for office.  However, one name is not going to be on the ballot.  A spokesperson for the Montgomery Election Center says that Janet May did not qualify for the mayor's race.

To run for mayor, you must pay a $300 fee and have 327 verified signatures. To run for city council, you must pay a $100 fee or have 200 verified signatures of people in that particular district.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - If you're looking to throw your hat into the ring for the Montgomery mayoral or council elections, you're time is running out.

To run for mayor, you must pay a $300 fee and have 327 verified signatures. To run for city council, you must pay a $100 fee or have 200 verified signatures of people in that particular district.

The deadline to qualify is Tuesday, July 12.

187th Fighter Wing commander resigns

187th Fighter Wing commander resigns

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Colonel Jeffrey S. Smiley, the Commander of the 187th Fighter Wing in Montgomery resigned his position Tuesday and was immediately replaced by Colonel Scott Patten as the interim wing commander.

WSFA 12 News sought reaction from Governor Robert Bentley's office and was referred to the Alabama National Guard for information on any pending investigation.

Lee announces re-election bid two months after win

Councilman Arch Lee has been on the job as the District 7 representative in Montgomery for just two months, but he now has to start the campaigning all over again. The seat's term ends in August.

Lee announced his re-election campaign for the District 7 seat Tuesday for the election set for Aug. 23.

Lee won a run-off for the seat against Jenny Ives on April 19 with 55% of the vote. He took the seat vacacted by Martha Roby who won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"What we have accomplished in the last two months is great, but there is more work to be done," Lee said. "It's important for everyone to come out on August 23 and vote."

CAP honored with international award

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -  Civil Air Patrol, the U.S. Air Force auxiliary, will be awarded a World Peace Prize during a June 14 ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize and retired U.S. Rep. Lester Wolff announced CAP will be honored as the World Peace Corps Mission's "Roving Ambassador for Peace" at the ceremony in Washington, D.C., which will also recognize top honor prize recipients H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III and Benjamin A. Gilman.

"Civil Air Patrol makes a huge impact, going above and beyond to make a profound difference in America's communities, saving lives and preserving liberty for all," said Wolff, in announcing the World Peace Prize recipients for 2010.

The World Peace Prize is presented annually by the World Peace Corps Mission, an international evangelical missionary organization.
