This Just In…  For the week of January 21-25, 2013

Kudos go to Wilson Elementary second grade students Max Boukouch, Deven Coleman, Young Ju Chae, Ryan O. Scott and Erin Monet Smith, third grader Junseo Park and fourth grade students Daniel Park, Chris Shiffer, Gage Allen, Andrew Jung and Tiarra Smith who reached their goals in Accelerated Reader. Also, Whitney Dyer’s class achieved Master Classroom status with Renaissance Learning. Master Classroom status means 90% of students averaged at or above 90% on all Accelerated Reader quizzes.

Congratulations go to the Lee High AFJROTC Color Guard Team and their instructor SMSgt JoDell Dunlap who were presented a plaque and certificate of appreciation from the members of the 908th Air Lift Wing/25th APS, Maxwell AFB. The team was recognized for its outstanding performance while performing a “Flag Folding” ceremony for the retirement of CMSgt Adriel.

Kudos go to Crump Elementary’s spelling bee winner Angel Smith and alternate Jaida Broadley.

Congratulations go to 10 seniors at Jeff Davis High who have been admitted to UAB. They are: Stanley Dixon, Shemeria Fletcher, Ashley Greenwood, Jeramus Griffin, Andrea Jackson, Adrianna Jackson, Danielle James, Latarius Oliver, Makiko Owens, and Nathaniel Parker.

Congratulations go to Bellingrath Middle student Stephen Varner who has one of the top 100 scores in the country on the academic/instructional website www.vocallanguagejourney.com.

Kudos go to Carver Elementary students who were winners of the 2012-2013 Spelling Bee. They are Jordan Donegan, first place; Mecca Townsend, second place; and Andarious Porter, third place. The coordinator of the spelling bee was Tamara Garrett.

Congratulations go to the spelling bee winners at Wilson Elementary. They are: Carol He, first place, Arnethia Arnell’s class, and Minkyung Cho, second place, Heather Adam’s class. They will compete in the County Spelling Bee at Frazer United Methodist Church in February.

Kudos go to Forest Avenue fourth and fifth grade students who participated in Wordmasters Challenge. Fifth grader Mary Olivia Dudley scored a perfect score of 20 on the first challenge. Fifth grade students ranked fifth nationally with their cumulative score. The top 10 scores are reported.

Congratulations go to MacMillan International Academy at McKee’s ABC Winner for January. Theresa Marshall was nominated for going Above and Beyond the Call of duty. She will receive 30 minutes duty free and a reserved parking space.

Congratulations go to Carver High quarterback Jeremy Johnson who was named “Mr. Football” by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Johnson threw for almost 3,200 yards this season and led the Wolverines to the Class 6A semifinals. Jeremy is the first “Mr. Football” in Carver’s history.

Brewbaker Tech’s carpentry and art classes collaborated on an Adirondack chair project. The junior carpentry classes constructed the chairs as one of their major projects this year and the art classes painted them in a variety of imaginative designs. The chairs will now be offered to the Brew Tech family for a donation to support future projects. Wayne Walters is the Building Science Academy instructor and Tara Jarrett is the Art instructor.

Montgomery Public Schools winter magnet application process will run through January 22, 2013. Applications, program admission requirements, information sheets and tour dates are available on the district website at www.preparingstudentsforlife.com or at any magnet school. The deadline to submit a magnet application and transcript to the magnet school you wish to apply for is Jan. 22. Notification of acceptance status for kindergarten and first grade applicants will be mailed on February 8. Grades 2-5 and middle and high school applicants will receive notification of acceptance on March 8.

The MPS Career and Technical Education Department is currently accepting applications for the district’s seven high school career academies through March 8, 2013. The career academies combine hands-on training with core academic courses, internships, dual enrollment and professional experiences.

Applications and information booklets are available on the district website at www.preparing studentsforlife.com under the For Students button on the homepage, or from any middle school in the guidance counselor’s office. The academies include Health Science, Teaching, Advanced Manufacturing, Hospitality & Tourism, Law & Public Safety, Business & Finance and Information Technology.

Montgomery Public Schools will be closed in observance of the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tuesday, January 22

Today is the deadline to turn in magnet applications.

Fifth grade students at Highland Gardens Elementary in RaShandra French’s class will participate in the Great Mail Race. Students will also have a week-long study on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also, signed papers will go home.

Students in grades K-2 at Wilson Elementary will see a program presented by Child Safety Advocacy and Training Supervisor Jennifer Hartley from the Family Sunshine Center entitled “Yellow Dyno Personal Safety.” In addition, the student government association will accept donations for Hurricane Sandy victims through February 15. The group of students that collects the most money will have a party. The PTA will kick off its cookie dough fundraiser.

Eighth grade pre-algebra students at Capitol Heights Middle in Dennis Sellers’ class will create a geometry booklet containing all geometry shapes and formulas needed to understand basic geometry.

Goodwyn Middle’s basketball teams will play at Southlawn Middle. Capitol Heights Middle’s basketball teams will play at McKee Middle. Brewbaker Middle’s basketball teams will play at Bellingrath Middle.   Georgia Washington Middle’s basketball teams will play at Dunbar-Ramer. Floyd Middle’s basketball teams will play at Carr Middle. Seventh grade boys play at 4:45 p.m.; girls at 6 p.m.; and eighth grade boys at 7:15 p.m.

Fourth grade students at Bear Exploration Center in Katie Blair’s class will go on a field trip to Old Alabama Town from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. In addition, the PTA will meet at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Kindergarten students at Johnson Elementary in Kimberly Bell’s class will celebrate the 100th Day of School by counting to 100 and participating in other activities that will be displayed in the kindergarten hall.

Second grade students at Southlawn Elementary in Barbara Belser, Joseph Brinson, and Sharmaine Pernell’s class will practice counting money by purchasing items from the classroom store. Also, kindergarten students in Rosee’ Brown’s class will learn about the letter “V.” They will also discuss instruments and write the numbers 11-19. Fifth grade students in Sheranda Murrell, Tiffany Pitts, and Kimberly Taite’s classes will study weather patterns in science, adjectives in English, and begin their B.E.A.R. project for Black History Month.

Second grade students at Pintlala Elementary in Regina White’s class will make models of “Our Town” for a social studies project.

Wednesday, January 23

Wilson Elementary language units will ride the downtown trolley to learn different modes of transportation in our city. Students will also recognize various historic landmarks

Thursday, January 24

Highland Gardens Elementary will hold 100th Day of School celebrations.

Wilson Elementary will celebrate the 100th Day of School.

Third grade students at Crump Elementary in Rodonna Shannon’s class will celebrate the 100th Day of School by giving senior citizens at Freewell Baptist Church 100 cans of food.

First grade teachers at Morris Elementary will dress like they are 100 years old for the 100th day of school. Students will participate in activities pertaining to the 100th day and they also bring in 100 items.

Wilson Elementary principal Meredith Bishop will hold a “Principal’s Paint Party” for top students in each homeroom. Their paintings will be displayed in Moe’s at Eastchase for two months. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase the paintings and Moe’s will donate the proceeds to the school.

Southlawn Middle’s basketball teams will play at McKee Middle. Carr Middle’s basketball teams will play at Bellingrath Middle. Capitol Heights Middle’s basketball teams will play Brewbaker Middle. Lee High’s Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) will sponsor a LifeSouth Community Blood Center drive at school from 8:30 – 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 – 2:45 p.m.

Pintlala Elementary will hold a celebration for staff and students with birthdays in December and January.

Members of the Junior Gardeners’ Club at Pintlala Elementary will continue their work on the Pintlala Community Garden. Club members will be supervised by nurse Jennifer Moseley.
