Downtown hotel could be imploded to make way for new development | News
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- A well known site in downtown Montgomery could soon crumble to the ground.
The State House Inn may stand tall on Madison Avenue, but Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange doesn't believe it adds any majesty to Montgomery's skyline.
"It's an eyesore," says Strange.
Madison Avenue has been a focal point for Montgomery revitalization for the last few years.
Cramton Bowl's facelift will soon be followed by a new façade for the Curb Market and a new municipal court building in the space across from the hotel.
"The plan for the building would be to cease operations and to demolish it, hopefully implode it as quickly as we can," adds Strange.
"The place there is run down and we need more productive things in this area," says Jettie Rawls.
Rawls has rented a booth at the Montgomery Curb Market for eight years now. It's right next to the State House Inn. But she doesn't think the location works in her favor.
"I think the building over there hurts our business," adds Rawls.
Some employees inside the State House Inn are concerned about the uncertainty of the building's future and wish the city would refrain from talking about the possible sale until it's a done deal.
"They have not signed the documents, I have signed the documents and we do have a letter of intent," adds Strange.
The Mayor doesn't know who owns the building and says it was possibly part of a bankruptcy.
Employees tell WSFA 12 News an Atlanta based management company currently oversees the property.
Attempts have been made to contact the company but representatives have not returned our calls.
Meanwhile, developers are watching what happens here.
"At least two hotels that have expressed interest not only in that site, but other sites," says Strange.
But only if the State House Inn is out of the picture.
