AUM Women's soccer received votes in 2012 NAIA Preseason Poll | News
The Auburn University at Montgomery women’s soccer team was among the others receiving votes in 2012 NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced today.
The Warhawks, 8-9-1 overall in 2011, earned 85 points in the poll, which was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference/independent/unaffiliated groups.
“We are pleased to be receiving votes in the preseason poll, considering the way our season concluded last year,” third-year head coach Jamey Newsome said. “I think this really speaks volumes to the reputation of AUM women’s soccer and the level of student-athletes that we have signed. We will certainly have our work cut out this year and must come ready to play every match. Being ranked in the preseason is a great honor, but our main objective is to be in the mix at the end of the season.”
Four-time defending national champions Lee University earned the top spot, claiming 560 points and all 20 first-place votes. National runner-up Concordia (Ore.) was voted second with 542 points, while Lindsey Wilson, Embry-Riddle and Mobile round out the top five. This season, AUM faces Lee, Lindsey Wilson and Mobile, all on the road.
The Warhawks were one of one Southern States Athletic Conference school’s represented in the preseason poll, with Lee and Mobile being the lone two ranked in the top 25. In addition to AUM, William Carey and Brenau were listed among the others receiving votes.
The first regular-season poll will be announced on Sept. 4.
