Capital City to Host River Region Veterans Day Celebration

MONTGOMERY – The City of Montgomery will host the second annual Veterans Day Celebration Nov. 11 with a concert and parade that will honor the men and women who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. 

The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. on the front steps of the State Capitol with a patriotic concert performed by the Capitol Sounds Concert Band and Chorus.  The special tribute will include remarks by Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, Gov. Robert Bentley and other distinguished guests.  

After the concert, events will continue at 11 a.m. with an F-16 flyover by the Air National Guard’s 187th Fighter Wing followed by a Veterans Day parade along Dexter Avenue.  Lt. Gen. Charles “Chick” Cleveland, USAF (Ret.), will serve as the parade’s Grand Marshal.  Cleveland, who retired from the Air Force in 1984, is a West Point graduate, former commander of Air University and a Korean War jet fighter ace.

Local Artists to hold artists market at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts

On Friday, November 18 from 5 to 8 PM and Saturday, November 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is hosting its 2nd Annual Artist Market. The event will allow participants to shop early for the holidays and mix and mingle with the artists in a unique and sophisticated setting.
 
Artists represented at the Market are featured in the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ Museum Store. Potters, painters, a watercolorist, jewelry artists, stained glass artists, textiles, and photography will be featured.
 
If unable to attend the Artist Market, patrons can find the work of represented artists represented in the Museum Store. It is stocked with handcrafted works by local and regional artists. Work includes paintings, drawings, pottery, glass, textiles, woodcarvings, and more.  The Store also has a nice selection of art books and other MMFA publications, along with children’s books and toys.

The Alabama Department of Corrections graduates third class of 2011

The Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim T. Thomas announced that the ADOC will hold its third Academy Basic Training graduation ceremonies on Wednesday, November 9, 2011

At present, 66 trainees are expected to complete certification requirements of the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.  The graduation ceremony will be held at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center, located at 211 Washington Street in Selma, Alabama.

Class 2011-03 began training in August at the new Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center on the campus of Wallace Community College in Selma.  The guest speaker will be Mr. Ron Sutton, former ADOC Deputy Commissioner

Tukabatchee Boy Scouts to host 2011 Annual Meeting and Silver Beaver Presentation

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Tukabatchee Area Council Boy Scouts will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. at Young Meadows Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.  The meeting will include a brief report from Council President, Billy Livings and the announcement of the 2012 Council Executive Board and Council Officers.  The meeting will also feature the awarding of five Silver Beaver Awards, which is the Council's highest volunteer recognition.

This year's Silver Beaver recipients are:

  • John T. Mott of Selma, AL
  • Paul Warren of Alexander City, AL
  • Billy Livings of Montgomery, AL
  • Jay Radford of Millbrook, AL
  • Steven Speaks of Montgomery, AL

There is no cost to attend the program and light refreshments will be served.  There will be ample time for fellowship and remarks to the five Silver Beaver recipients.

ASU's National Center to feature quilting exhibit and opening reception Sunday

The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University will display the quilt artistry of Tracie Lee Hawkins and Theresa McGhee Johnson in an exhibition titled “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: Out of Many, One” from Nov. 13  - March 16, 2012. 

The opening reception and gallery talk by Tracie Lee Hawkins will be held on Nov. 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This exhibition celebrates the coming together of two distinguished female quilt makers,” said Cleve M. Webber, National Center curator.

Check out ASU’s 2011 Hornet Homecoming schedule, including the annual Turkey Day Classic football game and concert, which this year will feature the smooth grooves of Frankie Beverly & Maze, and the powerhouse vocals of Jill Scott.

Alabama State University alumni, students, parents, community leaders and friends are invited to take part in this year’s Homecoming extravaganza, Nov. 18-26. 

“It’s a Great Time to Come Home!” is the theme of this year’s Turkey Day Classic and Hornet Homecoming, featuring an exciting array of activities for Hornets of all ages.

From the Hornets’ annual Turkey Day Classic football game against the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers, to the pageantry of the Turkey Day Classic Parade, to a communitywide Block Party in Montgomery’s vibrant Downtown Alleyway, there’s something for everyone.

MPS schools to honor Veterans Day on Thursday

MPS schools will be closed on Friday in honor of Veterans Day, but several schools will still hold celebrations to honor our veterans and active duty military on Thursday, November 10.

 

At 8:30 a.m.  the Halcyon Elementary student body will hold a special patriotic ceremony around the school flagpole at 8:30 a.m. The program will feature the Halcyon Show Choir and a special flag ceremony by the Prattville High School Air Force Junior ROTC.  The school will also provide free breakfast immediately following the event for military parents and their students to recognize the special sacrifices these parents and students are making to our community and country.
