First Lady to celebrate Alabama's birthday today | Events

The Alabama Department of Archives and History invites all Alabamians to celebrate Alabama's 193rd birthday. This celebration commemorates the day, December 14, 1819, when President James Monroe signed the resolution making Alabama the 22nd state to enter the Union.
 
This year, on Friday, December 14, 2012, over 150 fourth-grade students will join First Lady Dianne Bentley at the Alabama Department of Archives and History to celebrate Alabama's birthday. Students will tour museum exhibits at the Archives, participate in history-based arts activities, and sing the state song, Alabama.  Alabama's first Constitution, 1819, will be on display.
 
Students from Peter Crump Elementary and Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary from Montgomery County Public Schools will participate in the activities from 9:30-11:30. Mrs. Bentley will cut Alabama's birthday cake at 9:40 am.
 
December 14 was first celebrated as the state's birthday in 1903 and formally adopted as "Alabama Day" by resolution of the Legislature in 1923. Schools across the state are encouraged to celebrate Alabama's birthday in their own classrooms using suggested activities available on the Alabama Department of Archives and History website.  An Alabama Day Activity Booklet is also available for reproduction.
