Glenn Miller Holiday concert set for December 20th

The 31st annual Glenn Miller Holiday Concert is sure to spread some holiday cheer while benefitting the Montgomery Area Food Bank.

People coming to the free concert at the Davis Theatre, Dec. 20, are encouraged to bring a canned good item for the food bank. Concert starts at 7 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m., seating is first come, first serve and food donation boxes will be at the door. More than 2,200 pounds of food was collected at last year’s concert.

The U.S. Air Force “Airmen of Note” will perform big band swing music and holiday favorites in the style of renowed band leader Glenn Miller, who was stationed at Maxwell for a short time in 1942.

Former Air University commander (1981-84) retired Lt. Gen. Charles Cleveland initiated the concert tradition as a tribute to Glenn Miller in 1982. Miller, a U.S. Army Air Corps captain, and his band, “Maxwell’s Rythmaires,” performed a Christmas concert on the base in an aircraft hangar in 1942.

Civil Air Patorl to honor veterans as part of wreath-laying salute

Members of Civil Air Patrol are proud to partner once more with Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization that recognizes the courage and sacrifices of U.S. veterans by placing wreaths on the graves of the fallen during the holiday season.

This year, in tribute to the 25 million men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces — guarding and preserving America’s freedom throughout history — Maine balsam wreaths will be placed on more than 325,000 veterans’ graves at 800-plus cemetery or memorial sites in all 50 states, as well as 20-plus foreign locations.

“Our mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America.

Wreaths Across America culminates on Dec. 15 with thousands of wreaths placed on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery and at several of Arlington’s memorials, including the Tomb of the Unknowns.
