Montgomery Catholic Students Give Back to the Community During Annual Lenten Day of Service | Community Spirit

“Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. And to give His life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28. Serving others in our community is not only the focus of Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School’s annual Lenten Day of Service, but has been a part of the school’s mission since 1873.
With the help of Hands on River Region over 300 Montgomery Catholic students in grade nine through twelve and faculty members will spend a combined total of over 900 hours volunteering the morning of March 26. The students will be working at 15 locations around the River Region performing various tasks such as spending time with elderly residents, cleaning up trails at YMCA’s Camp Grandview and Camp Chandler, cleaning up the Remount Cemetery with the Montgomery Clean City Commission, and completing projects on campus at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School among many other works of service throughout the community.
The organizations and agencies being served by Montgomery Catholic high school students in the River Region are:
Montgomery Area Council on Aging-Archibald Senior Center

Work: Outdoor weeding in agency gardens.
Mission: MACOA offers programs to help meet the needs of practically every older person.
Remount Cemetery- Mtg. Clean City Commission
Harrison Rd.- on the corner of Lincoln and Harrison/Chestnut
Work: Outdoor cleanup in old cemetery.
Mission: The Montgomery Clean City Commission is an inter-governmental organization created to improve the appearance of the city and increase pride of the residents. The CCC works with several projects to enhance residental, public and commercial properties and manages the area recycle program.
Alabama Wildlife Federation

Work: Volunteers will cut privet, collect sticks and cut vines. AWF will provide all necessary tools.
Mission: AWF is the state's oldest and largest citizens' conservation organization. The mission is to promote conservation and wise use of Alabama's wildlife and related natural resources.
Head Start Family Services Center

Work: Volunteers will be filing records.
Mission: Head Start is designed to help children and their families during the formative years by providing comprehensive educational, nutrition, health, and family services.
Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

Work: Volunteers will be washing both sides of the agency's very large windows
Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place!
Fort Toulouse/Jackson Historic Landmark
2521 West Fort Toulouse Road, Wetumpka, AL 36093
Work: Volunteers will work in the fort garden and pick up limbs from winter storms.
Mission: Fort Toulouse-Jackson National Historic Park provides visitors an opportunity to enjoy 165 acres of history and natural beauty.
YMCA, Camp Chandler (Wetumpka)

Work: Cleaning, yard work, possible painting.
Mission: Camp Chandler provides a summer camp for children where they can develop outdoor skills and self-esteem in a fun, responsible, Christian environment.

Work: Tasks to include cleaning stalls, grooming horses, property maintenance and weeding the garden space.
Mission: To provide a safe and effective therapeutic riding to Tri County Adults and Children with physical, cognitive, emotional, and developmental disabilities.

Work: Zoo would like the OLDER students to rake, work in a garden and do outside maintenance work. Tools provided by zoo.
Mission: Offers residents and visitors 40 acres featuring habitats from 5 continents with naturalistic, barrier-free exhibits for more than 600 animals.
YMCA Camp Grandview, Millbrook

Wear: Work clothes and closed toe shoes.
Work: Projects include: painting, minor landscaping, trail clearing, light cleaning.
Mission: Provides a summer camp environment, recreation and exercise facilities, and child care to its clients.
MACOA Senior Centers (Newtown Senior Center, Normandale Senior Center and Perry Hill Senior Center)

Work: duties will include assisting with the preparation of meals for volunteer couriers to pick up and also serving meals to the seniors at the (3) centers.
Mission: MACOA assists senior citizens by offering a variety of programs that promote independent living, by offering opportunities to enhance quality of life and by increasing awareness of senior issues.
John Knox Manor Nursing Home
4401 Narrow Lane Road, Montgomery, AL 36116
Work: Volunteers will visit with nursing home residents, help transport them to activities, have room-to-room visits, read to them, chat, help them write letters and make phone calls and paint ladies' nails. Residents LOVE hearing people sing so any singing would be appreciated.
