MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - It's the first of its kind in the state of Alabama, and perhaps the nation. Thursday, Medical Aids Outreach announced the grand opening of a food pantry right inside the medical facility that helps those struggling with the disease.
The Junior League of Montgomery partnered with Medical Aids Outreach to start, staff and stock the food.
Suzanne Davidson, President of the Junior League of Montgomery, says the opening is a big deal. Davidson said there had been talk for a long time to start such a pantry, "but there's no seed money available through other organizations... "
Patients can bring a list of recommended foods provided by a nutritionist where their will then be filled. They'll also learn how to make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
Davidson says the League's cost this year is around $25,000, but she says they're working closely with another organization that knows all about the food needs of the community, The Montgomery Area Food Bank.
