BRIDGES Girls Shelter celebrates successful grand opening | Community Spirit

BRIDGES (Building Responsible Individuals through Deliberate Guidance and Support) Girls Shelter commemorated its opening on July 23rd in Tuskegee. BRIDGES Girls Shelter is a subsidiary program of TEARS (Teens Empowerment Awareness with ResolutionS), Incorporated. All counties served by the shelter were represented. Present at the outdoor ceremony were Tuskegee Mayor Omar Neal, Former Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford, Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Biggers, TEARS, Inc. Board Members, Louis Maxwell of the Macon County Commission Office, Phenix City Police Department Juvenile Division Supervisor Mark Rogers, and Phenix City Councilwoman Michelle Walker . Representatives from the Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce, Tuskegee University, Troy University, The Utility Board of Tuskegee, Macon County Department of Human Resources, the Phenix City Police Department and other members of the community were also in attendance. Special presentations were made to Courtney Hall of the Macon County Department of Human Resources for his dedication to the youth of Macon County, W. H. Hogencamp Architects, and retired architect Lillian Dixon. TEARS, Inc. founder Angelia Walton presented Lillie Herndon with a plaque for her generosity in TEARS, Inc. acquiring her former home which is now BRIDGES Girls Shelter. While accepting her award, Ms. Herndon stated, “It’s good to see that the house being put to good use.” The ceremony was followed by a ribbon-cutting and tour of the facility. The shelter’s bedrooms were dedicated to Ms. Dixon, Mr. Hogencamp, and Ms. Herndon respectfully before being unveiled to the attendees. Refreshments were served outside following the tour. BRIDGES Girls Shelter serves girls ages 13 to 17 in Macon, Lee, Bullock, Montgomery, Russell, and surrounding counties in Alabama as well as Muscogee County in Georgia.
