MONTGOMERY, AL - The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) announced Monday that the new Doubletree by Hilton is now open for business in downtown Montgomery.

John Tampa and his hotel development team, that also renovated the Hampton Inn & Suites downtown, have transformed the old Madison Hotel into a contemporary, state-of-the art 131 room property.

Located at 120 Madison Avenue, the property is within walking distance from the Montgomery Convention Center and is included the downtown entertainment district. The addition of this hotel to the downtown inventory  is expected to have a sizeable impact on economic development and contribute greatly to convention recruitment efforts.

Montgomery welcomes home soldier with free LASIK

Montgomery welcomes home soldier with free LASIK

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – An army of friends deployed for Lt. Col. William T. Reeves Jr.  They made sure he would receive the free LASIK laser vision correction he always wanted, when the soldier of three wars returned home to Montgomery.

Reeves won Primary Eyecare Associates' LASIK giveaway for "Hometown Heroes" late last year, when he still was serving in Afghanistan.  The Montgomery eye care practice has been donating LASIK to community heroes for three years.  Reeves received an unprecedented number of 330 votes from the public to be chosen.

Now, Reeves is home and just received his LASIK surgery.  As a result, the veteran sees 20/10 – which is better than perfect 20/20 vision – without glasses or contacts, for the first time in 40 years.

Alabama entrepreneurs that didn’t meet the January deadline for the Alabama Launchpad “Proof of Commercial Relevance” Start-up Competition don’t need to fret.

The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation has announced that there will be a second round of its popular Alabama Launchpad competition, which helps Alabama’s entrepreneurs develop their ideas into successful high growth companies for the state.

Registration for the second round of competition starts April 22. The competition is open to teams with business ideas in the “pre-seed” phase. The startups will compete for $100,000 in cash prizes.

This is the first time since the competition’s start in 2005 that there will be back-to-back competitions.  The current round of competition is underway.  In all, 22 teams – twice as many as 2012 – registered by the Jan. 13 deadline to participate in this year’s competition.
