Dan Carter to speak at ArchiTreats tomorrow | Arts & Culture
Title (Max 100 Characters)
Join the Alabama Department of Archives and History tomorrow, January 17th, at noon as ArchiTreats: Food for Thought begins another year of informative talks on Alabama history at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
Dan Carter will present "Segregation Forever": The Speech that Launched George Wallace's National Career.
A number of individuals have claimed responsibility for ghostwriting George Wallace’s most famous speech, his 1963 Inaugural Address in which he promised “Segregation Now, Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever!” In part this talk will be a discussion of the various sources from which the final speechwriter, former Klansman Asa Carter, shaped his remarks. Dan Carter will describe the ramifications of Wallace’s speech and the way in which it both propelled him to national prominence and, in the long run, prevented him from ever becoming more than a third-party force.
The public is invited to bring a sack lunch and enjoy a bit of Alabama History.
