SUBJECT: Request for approval of tree removal and replacement for the property located at 1103 Magnolia Curve (Old Cloverdale).
REMARKS: The petitioner is requesting permission to remove a popcorn tree (Chinese tallow) on the east side of the building and replace it with a shade tree. The petitioner proposes replacing the tree within 30 days of removal of the old tree.

SUBJECT: Request for approval of driveway material and new parking area for the property located at 417 Thorn Place (Old Cloverdale).
REMARKS: The petitioner is requesting permission to retain gravel that was installed over an existing driveway as well as an expanded parking area as illustrated. The drive and parking area currently have no edging or landscaping.

Artist to conducting live, on-location painting of Rosa Parks' home

  MONTGOMERY-Artist Ted Ellis will commemorate the historic home of Rosa Parks during a live, on-location painting on Friday, Jan. 14, in Montgomery.   Members of the public are invited to watch as Ellis creates an original painting of Parks' former home in the Cleveland Court Apartments located at 1026 Rosa Parks Avenue. Ellis will paint from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   "This event is open to all and we invite the public to come and observe the artist create a historic work of art," said Viola Moten, curator of Troy University's Rosa Parks Museum.  

 

Riley Awards Grants to Help Domestic Violence Victims in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Bob Riley has awarded two grants that help provide assistance and justice for Montgomery victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

A $96,892 grant to the city of Montgomery will help fund the police department’s Domestic Violence Response Bureau at the new One Place Family Justice Center. The center serves as a central location for law enforcement and nonprofit agencies to work together to help victims.

Montgomery County is receiving an $89,000 grant to continue the Violence Against Women Prosecution Unit in the district attorney’s office. The unit includes a prosecutor who handles domestic violence cases and a victims service officer who helps victims to navigate the legal system.

The Alpha Course to Begin at First United Methodist Church

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alpha Course is a study of the Christian faith.  It explores the answers to questions like “What is the meaning of life?” “What happens when we die?” “What relevance does Jesus have for our lives?” and “How do we deal with guilt?”  The course will begin on Tuesday, January 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and continue every Tuesday night until April 12.  All members of the community are invited to the course. After each talk there will be an opportunity to gather in small groups to discuss, meet new people and answer questions.  Dinner will be provided, as well as a nursery for children.

Camp P.R.I.D.E. date set

2011 Camp P.R.I.D.E (Personal Responsibility In Delivering Excellence) will be held at Cramton Bowl on June 11th in Montgomery, Alabama.

Camp P.R.I.D.E is a one day Free sports camp designed to encourage youth of Montgomery and surrounding areas to take a personal assessment of their lives and allow them the opportunity to understand how character and physical health leads to success. Unlike other sport camps, P.R.I.D.E will plant seeds of hope and equip the participants with the tools that are essential to striving for excellence by offering teamwork, goal setting, and peer pressure exercise along with various relay competitions. The camp will allow the youth the opportunity to spend time with local mentors and professional athletes while offering a memorable, learning experience.

 

More information concerning Camp P.R.I.D.E will be sent out in the next few months.
