"Sons of Confederate Veterans" to remember 150th Anniversary of the Civil War

This coming Saturday, the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) is holding a major event to honor the sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, of the beginning of the Civil War. The festivities will “commemorate” events that most Americans see as a terribly dark period in American history: “the founding of the Confederate States of America, the inauguration of Jefferson Davis and the raising of the first Confederate Flag.”

The celebrations will include a march up Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue to the Capitol, with participants festooned in hoop skirts, battle flags and other period dress. On the steps of the Capitol, the group will reenact the swearing in of Jefferson Davis, the first and only president of the CSA. The march begins at 11:00 a.m. and will be immeadiately followed by a speech at noon and the swearing-in at 1:00 p.m.

ASU Science Professor receives patent for invention

ASU Science Professor receives patent for invention

Dr.  Shree R. Singh, director of ASU’s Center for NanoBiotechnology and Life Sciences Research, has received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a co-inventor of using a DNA biochip to detect RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).

A  DNA biochip is a microchip that uses tiny strands of DNA to latch onto and quickly recognize thousands of genes at a time. Like a computer chip that can perform millions of mathematical operations in one second, a biochip can perform thousands of biological reactions, such as decoding genes, in a few seconds.

RSV is a virus that causes respiratory tract infections. It is the major cause of lower respiratory tract infection and hospital visits during infancy and childhood.  It is also a recognized cause of illness in adults.

Singh said the patent allows ASU to become more of a leader in the scientific community.
