Montgomery Catholic Knights Win Season-Opening Golf Tournament

The Montgomery Catholic varsity golf team overcame a sluggish start with a strong finish to capture first place in the Auburn Invitational Monday at Indian Pines Golf Club.

Junior Jacob Stinson shot a 73 to earn medalist honors and junior Jason Katz shot a 77 to lead the Knights to a two-shot victory over host Auburn High School. Katz was named to the all-tournament team.

The Knights shot a team score of 313. Sophomore Chapman Barranco had an 81 and junior Corey Jackson had an 82. Zach Jones, an eighth-grader, shot an 87.

The Knights are back in action Feb. 28 and March 1 in the annual Blue-Gray Invitational at Wynlakes and Lagoon Park.

ALDOT issues emergency road closure for part of I-85/I-65 Interchange - plan accordingly

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Transportation has issued an Emergency Road closure for two lanes of the I-85/I-65 exchange.

The center lane initially and then the left lane will be closed to conduct maintenance operations Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 23-24 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use caution in this area.

MPS Begins Application Period for Career Academies

Montgomery, Ala.? Beginning this week, Montgomery Public Schools will accept applications for its traditional high school career academies. The career academies cover a wide range of career fields to include Advanced Manufacturing (Carver High), Hospitality and Tourism (Carver High), Information Technology (Lee High), Health Science (Jeff Davis High), Teaching (Jeff Davis High), Business and Finance (Lanier High), and Law and Public Safety (Lanier High).

 

“Our career academies are four-year programs that begin in the ninth grade and afford students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills leading to college or technical school, receive industry certification or immediately move into the workforce after graduation with marketable entry-level skills,” said Superintendent  Barbara Thompson.

Scholarship open to all African-American students aspiring to be broadcast journalists

Applications are now being accepted for the JoAnne Robinson Memorial Scholarship, which is open to all African-American college students aspiring to become broadcast journalists.

 

The deadline for submitting information is Feb. 28, and a scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the end of this spring semester for use during the upcoming academic year.

 

The scholarship was established in 1999 to honor the memory of JoAnne Robinson. 

 

In the past 10 years, WEWS News Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio has awarded scholarships to students from universities around the country to honor Robinson. The 2010 scholarship winner was Jordan Riles of Savannah State University.

 

Candidates' forum for District 7 council seat on Feb.24 at Ascension

District 7 City Council Candidate Forum:

There will be a candidate’s forum for the District 7 City Council seat this Thursday, February 24th at 6:30 pm. The forum will be at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 315 Clanton Street (corner of Clanton  and S. McDonough).

The meeting will be in the Ascension Hall at the far north end of the complex. Enter in the McDonough St. entrance. Everyone is welcome to attend.
