Parents outraged over renovations delay at local rec center

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - There's only one term to describe how parents of children who go to the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center feel.

"Frustrated...extremely frustrated," says Linda Turner.

They all have children who swim in the pool there and they have been pleading with directors to renovate the locker rooms--where mold and mildew have plagued the walls for years, now.

"The mold just keeps of course getting worse the longer nothing's done about it," says Chyrl Willis.

"The locker room is very disgusting because when we shower after practice, I normally don't shower at all," says Karen Willis, who swims in the pool every week.

Popular burger stand closes

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A popular Montgomery burger stand is closing near Gunter Annex.  It's not closing due to the economy, but because of health regulations.  Vicki's Lunch Van, off Congressman Dickinson Drive, has been serving up burgers and more for 9 years.

"It's the best kept secret in Montgomery, but if you came here at noon, it didn't look like a secret."

Owner Vicki Lammon says the health department told her the stand was operating outside of regulations.

"They really been lenient, truly over the last nine years, so in order to just keep everything smooth, I've just chose to let it go," Lammon said.

It was sad news for frequent customer Gina Nicolich and her daughter, who moved to Montgomery from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Funding for meth lab clean-up cut from local law enforcement

Posted by: Melissa McKinney - bio | email

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Sheriff's deputies are used to calling haz-mat crews to clean up dangerous meth lab chemicals.

But they're not used to footing the bill.

"Basic clean-up starts at $1,500," says Captain Mark Thompson with the Montgomery Sheriff's Department.

Thompson says when he got the news the federal government has stopped paying for meth lab clean-up crews, "everybody went scrambling."

He says because the county's budget is already tight, "we're going to have to cut something short to cover this downfall in the meth lab clean-up."

Montgomery police officer indicted on identity theft charges

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)A veteran Montgomery police officer is under arrest and charged with two counts of identity theft. Bradley Howard Pemberton, 41, a sergeant with the Montgomery Police Department, is facing federal wire fraud and identity theft charges said Leura G. Canary, United States Attorney.

The MPD placed Pemberton on mandatory leave with pay effective Feb. 10, 2011. The department has since "initiated proceedings to terminate Pemberton's employment," according to Director Chris Murphy of the Montgomery Police Department. He's been with the department since 1994.

The indictment, which was unsealed Friday, alleges that through his position with MPD, Pemberton was authorized to access the Law Enforcement Tactical System ("LETS"), which is maintained by the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center ("ACJIC").

Meeting on MPS personnel cuts rescheduled

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A meeting that was called by the Montgomery County Board of Education to discuss employee reductions will not take place Monday as was scheduled.

The Board decided to push the special meeting back to March 8. The new meeting time is scheduled for 5:15pm on March 8 at Bellingrath Middle School. It will be immediately followed by the Committee of the Whole meeting.

Board members say the new date gives district staff more time to evaluate personnel cuts to Central Office and school-based personnel.

The Board voted Thursday in a 6-1 decision on a school consolidation and rezoning plan that will end with layoffs and the closure of eight schools.
