AU grad and PGA touring pro starts "Birdies for Bama" to help victims of Alabama Tornadoes

Starting this week at the PLAYERS Championship, and through the TOUR Championship, PGA touring pro Jason Dufner will donate $100 per birdie and $500 for every eagle to a fundraising program called"Birdies for Bama" to raise money to help rebuild tornado-ravaged Alabama.  He's challenging fans, fellow AU alums and others to join him by matching his donations at any level -- or by simply donating through his new foundation.

Dufner has lived in Auburn since he began attending Auburn University and his girlfriend, Amanda Boyd, grew up in Montgomery and attended the University of Alabama.

"For the past 16 years, I*ve been proud to call Alabama home, and it was heartbreaking to see the damage and hardship for so many people there with the recent tornadoes," Dufner said.

Summer hours announced for MPS system

MONTGOMERY, AL „Ÿ The Montgomery Public School system announced changes to its operating hours for the summer months of 2011. Beginning May 30 the system will move to a four-day work week with each day being 9.5 hours long. The change will apply to the Central Office and schools.

"In addition to saving money by reducing utility and fuel costs, parents and community members who work will have an opportunity to take care of school business without having to take off," said Superintended Barbara Thompson. "Employees will work the same number of hours each week, we save on very scarce resources, and the public can do business more easily during the extended hours. We also felt our employees were more productive having longer hours to work on projects without interruption. It is a win-win."
