Long lines continue at Montgomery Co. probate office

The Montgomery County Probate office says long lines continue into the new week, but spokesman Wells Robinson says the lines are not as bad as they were last week.

Robinson says September and October are historically busy months and that the new immigration law simply added to the demand for service.

Friday, the doors of the probate office closed at 5:00pm and employees stayed until 9:00pm processing hundreds of people who were in line, Robinson said.

More than 4,000 transactions were processed on the last business day of the month, the same day in 2010 saw about a thousand less transactions.

Robinson said the probate office is working to help as many people as possible.

Immigration law affecting MPS Hispanic attendance numbers

Immigration law affecting MPS Hispanic attendance numbers

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - According to the Montgomery Public School District Hispanic, attendance numbers have been down since Alabama's immigration law has gone into effect.

School District Spokesperson Tom Salter says the district has approximately 1,200 Hispanic students enrolled. On Thursday, 232 students identified as Hispanic were absent. About 116 "Hispanic" students were absent on Friday and 102 were absent on Monday.

After three days of unexcused absences MPS will begin trying to locate the student with phone calls and visits.

Salter says this will not affect funding for the school - state funding is based on the average enrollment for the first 20 days after labor day, Monday is the first day of that count. A student is still considered as enrolled in school until he or she is formally withdrawn. Ultimately it is enrollment that matters, not attendance.

District one run-off on Tuesday

Challenger Richard Bollinger will tell you there are some things he agrees with councilman Jim Spear on such as the need for more jobs and reduce crime but Bollinger still feels it's time for a change, fresh energy.

Spear is wrapping up his second term on the council.

"We have two new councilmen already and I just think it's time for fresh leadership," said Bollinger who has his own business as an engineer and landsurveyor.

"What he doesn't understand is he's made promises he can't keep. This district seat is only one vote on the council," said Spear who is in the retirement planning business.

District one stretches from the far reaches of east Montgomery to Atlanta Highway and back towards town to Perry Hill and Harrison Roads. The population in district one is around 25,000.

Between the two men Spear and Bollinger will have spent a combined total of around $55,000 on the race.

MONTGOMERY, AL- The members of the EMERGE Montgomery's Torchbearers Class III were divided into small groups and tasked with a project that addresses a definable issue within the Region.  The New Development group noticed a disconnect between the artist subculture and young professionals and decided to bridge the gap by focusing on promoting art and culture in our community. The group created an event called "Artists on Tap" to give artists throughout the River Region a means to share their creativity and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents, while giving young professionals a venue to connect and have access to the works of up and coming artists in the community.
