Southern Poverty Law Center Announces Expansion of Legal Staff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) announced an expansion of its legal department, including the addition of an attorney and two community advocates to its Alabama office today.
 
Caren Short joins the SPLC as a staff attorney at the office in Montgomery. Monique Gillum and Michael Granger will each serve as community advocates.
“Over the last several years we have grown tremendously in response to the important civil rights issues our work addresses,” said Mary Bauer, SPLC legal director. “We are honored to have these talented individuals join the Southern Poverty Law Center.”

ASU Foundation to Host Draw-down Fundraiser for $10,000

The third annual October Fest Draw-down will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Banquet Room. It begins at 5 p.m. (after the ASU vs. Prairie View A&M University football game). Admission is $100, plus an additional $25 for each guest (tax deductible). The grand cash prize is $10,000. You do not have to be present to win.

Who does this help?

It raises funds to provide aid to financially challenged students and provide education enrichment programs for professors and students.

What is a Draw-down?

The draw-down is a raffle drawing in reverse.


How does the Draw-down work?

All tickets are drawn, leaving only 10 tickets in the barrel. If you are one of the lucky 10, you have an opportunity to win the grand prize or share in the grand prize. Participants are asked to indicate on their ticket if they wish to share the grand prize.

Man found guilty in 2007 murder of local Pastor

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery man has been found guilty of the 2007 murder of a local Pastor and will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole for his crimes.

According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Franky "Smiley" Johnson was found guilty on Tuesday for the September 24, 2007 murder of Reverend Paul Boswell.

The murder happened just off of the Alabama State University campus. An ASU Security Officer thought a traffic accident had caused a Cadillac to run into the front yard of a run-down house on Harriet Street. When the officer went to investigate the incident he found Reverend Boswell's body under the car.

Ingram calls Forestry Commission over large fire

MONTGOMERY CO., AL (WSFA) - Montgomery County Commissioner Reed Ingram says he's concerned with the size of a large, controlled burn near Ramer even though it was permitted by the Alabama Forestry Department.

Quite a few viewers contact the WSFA 12 Newsroom about the fire, which could be seen for miles.

Commissioner Ingram said the fire, estimated at 80 acres, was an agriculture controlled burn, but he became concerned because the land in the area is very dry.

Ingram said no one from the State of Alabama notified the Montgomery County Sheriff's office of the large burn. Had the burn gotten out of control, Ingram said, the county's first responders would have been forced to respond to the blaze.

MPD: Victim expected to be OK after being pulled from a burning car

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery Police say a person rescued from a burning vehicle late Saturday night is expected to be OK.

Authorities responded to an accident at the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Haskell Drive after 11:00 p.m. Saturday. An MPD Spokesperson says a person was trapped in a vehicle that was on fire. Authorities were able to rescue the person from the vehicle and they are expected to be OK.

No word on what caused this accident or the identity of the individual rescued.

Hanceville Reaches 6-0 For First Time Since 1987 With Win Over Cordova

 

            MONTGOMERY – Hanceville High School downed Cordova 42-8 Friday night to reach 6-0 on the season for the first time since 1987. In the process the Bulldogs handed Cordova its first regular-season home loss since 2008 and grabbed the Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight for week six of the 2011 football season.

            Hanceville got a stellar performance from running back Diamond Simmons, who gained 175 yards on 18 rush attempts and scored four touchdowns. Fullback Sheldon Lewis added 124 yards on nine carries with an 82-yard TD run.
