Montgomery neighborhood hit by rash of dog thefts

Residents in one Montgomery neighborhood are trying to track down a canine caper.

Neighbors in the Carriage Hills subdivision near the East Boulevard believe someone is stealing their dogs--including one mother who was forced to break the news to her son who is currently serving overseas in the United States Navy.

There used to be three dogs in Wanda Smith's backyard. But one afternoon while out running errands, she believes her Dachshund, Sisqo, and her son's Chinese Pug, Rocky, "were stolen out of the yard. They was no way they could have gotten out," says Smith.

When she realized they were nowhere to be found, she had to tell her son--Hayward--the news.  He was thousands of miles away in Afghanistan.

"I just broke down. I couldn't even explain myself," adds Smith.

Smith talked to other neighbors who say they, too, have come home only to find their dogs missing.

Blue Sky Girls of Alabama to bring Rhett Syndrome awareness to State Capitol

Blue Sky Girls of Alabama to bring Rhett Syndrome awareness to State Capitol

October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month.  Rett Syndrome is a devastating neuro-developmental disorder affecting almost exclusively girls.  After a period of normal infancy, the girls begin missing milestones.  Next, regression begins and they lose all of their language and speech and most functional hand use.  Some girls learn to walk and regress, others never learn to walk.  By age 10, any girl still walking is considered “very lucky.”  The hardest part is that most of our girls have normal intelligence but they are “trapped” in a body that does not work!  Rett Syndrome occurs in 1 of every 10,000 female births but is still relatively unknown.  It is often misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy.  We need help educating the public about Rett Syndrome and its symptoms.

Miss ASU Coronation to be held Thursday in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome

Alabama State University will host the annual Miss ASU ‘2011-12’ Coronation on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

This year’s theme is “Embracing the Legacy of Womanhood through the Celebration of Queens.”

CharaieCelia Hamilton, a senior majoring in theatre arts, realized a lifelong dream the day she won the title of Miss Alabama State University.

The Montgomery native said she decided to seek the crown after visiting the 1998 Miss ASU Coronation ceremony.

Hamilton’s vision is to reach out to the youth, especially young girls, and encourage them to go to college. Representing ASU is not new to Hamilton. She was crowned Miss Junior for the 2010-11 school term and has served as Miss Students Taking Action Today Implementing Change (STATIC) during the 2009-10 school year.

Hamilton plans to attend graduate school and earn a master’s degree political science. Her ultimate goal is to one day become a U.S. senator.

Residents enjoy annual Riverwalk Wine Festival

Hundreds of people were downtown today at the annual Riverwalk Wine Festival.

One ticket earned attendees a bag, glass, and plenty of samples of Alabama wines and those from around the world.

Festival goers also enjoyed food samples from area Montgomery restaurants like Midtown Pizza Kitchen, Roux, and Peppertree Steaks. They even got a chance to take a Harriott II boat ride after the event.

Residents say the event was a good way to learn what wines they like and do not like in a fun atmosphere.
